Celebrating the Mexican Tradition of the Quinceanera
Primarily a Mexican tradition, quinceaneras are elaborate parties thrown in celebration of a girl becoming a woman at the age of 15. Borrowed quinceanera gowns will be on display in the Arts Council’s galleries, as well as the photography of prolific Grand Rapids artist Roli Mancera.
Mancera is well-known for his celebration of Mexican culture in large scale murals, performance art, alter installations for the Dia Los Muretos, sculpture and more. Mancera brings his artist’s eye to family portraiture, elevating the task to say much more. This exhibition displays his dramatic photography celebrating special family moments, specifically quinceaneras.
This exhibit is sponsored, in part, by Ketzi and Doug Zylstra
