Summer Enrichment Series - Mushrooms 101

Saturday Sep 23 10:00am
Holland Farmers Market
150 West 8th Street

About the Event:
For the fifth and final installment of our Series on Saturday, September 23 at 10:00 am, you’re invited to join the Holland Farmers Market and our very own Mycophile’s Garden to learn everything you need to know about mushrooms!

Interested in learning about wild mushrooms that occur in our state? Curious about the nutritional and medicinal benefits of eating mushrooms or how to more easily add them to your diet? Join Mycophile’s Garden for a brief introduction to the wide world of edible fungi!

The class will begin with a brief introduction to the best available books, websites, and organizations for learning how to identify many of the thousands of species that occur in Michigan.
Then, you’ll learn mushroom preparation and edibility and the unique medicinally active compounds found in many species. With edible species alone accounting for over 2,000 different varieties worldwide, there’s much to learn!

There will also be a chance for Q&A following a segment on growing your own mushrooms at home for fun and food! Many species can be grown outdoors in Michigan, as well as in basements, garages, and spare rooms.

About the Host
Mycophile’s Garden has been a vendor at the Holland Farmers Market since 2015. They grow and forage for around 30 species of edible mushrooms and distribute them to farmers markets, stores, restaurants, and more all across west Michigan and the Lansing area. They’re proud to bring delicious and uncommon foods to our friends and customers!
